Otter and More Lead Pencils

Hi there everyone.  I am quite taken with using lead pencils so I decided to try the same technique I used on the turtle shown here but with this lovely otter and a bit more colour this time, using one of the images from a set by Hobby Art which is being inked for the first time.  I also used a leafy stencil out of a pack I got at the The Range a while ago.

I started by stamping the image on to my square piece of white card using Versafine Smokey Gray ink and then masked it before stamping the rock he is standing on.  I then added the foreground leaves using my Misti, stamping several times to get a good dark image.  I did some shading with my set of pencils using mainly a 3B, 5B and 6B.  I then stencilled some leaves in Mowed Lawn Distress Ink using a brush for a light look and then re-applied the mask before stencilling the sun around him with Adirondack Sunshine Yellow with a home made mask circle die cut from a piece of copy paper.   I added the water using the straight edge of the piece of paper using Adirondack Stonewashed but thought it needed brightening so added some Salty Ocean DI.  I made a bit of shading in the water with the 6B pencil and finished with a sentiment using Versafine Clair Nocturne ink and heat embossed it with WOW Clear Gloss Embossing Powder.  Finally I mounted it on to a piece of dark green card and adhered it to my usual 6" square white card.

I do like the pencil work but I don't think it looks quite as good as the turtle and I think I could have added a bit more texture on the rock which looks a bit more like a cushion that a piece of stone...lol, but nevertheless I am pleased with it.

Before I go I would like to introduce a new follower called Dena whose blog you will find here.  She does beautiful work across all sorts of crafts and if you like Crafty Individuals she has just become a member of the DT and I'm sure she would love you to go and visit her.

Your pencil work is very effective Pat and works particularly well on the Otter who I would imagine are not the easiest of things to capture with colour mediums. He is a rather splendid fellow isn't he. Thanks so much for joining this weeks 'stamping' theme at Allsorts challenge.

Hi Pat, thank you for your sweet words on my card and about my knee surgery. We read about each other through the blogs haha! It was a major operation with a lot of pain, but luckily the pain is getting less! My physiotherapist is satisfied with the way things are going now ... but I want it faster than I can! I think your cards are beautiful and how you play with ink and colors ... great! I'm going to follow you! Dear greetings Ellen

Stunning Pat! Your use of the pencils is fab (and there's nowt wrong with an otter resting on a fluffy cushion!) Although you're far too critical - I love this card and his stone looks just fine to me! x

I think that you can be proud of your pencilwork and I do not see a cushion but a rock : :) I also love the soft hues of the background and how the plants on the foreground provide depth. A lovely and subtle card!

I need to apologise Pat as I was sure that I'd commented on this post, so not sure what happened there. This card looks amazing. I absolutely love your use of pencil in this artwork as it gives it such a natural and realistic result. This is something that I definitely need to try, so thank you for the inspiration x

I think your card looks fantastic, Pat! I used to love working with pencils and still have them somewhere; they haven't seen the light of day for like 40 years, lol! I love your otter and the beautiful sunset scene you have designed for him. And why can't he be relaxed on a pool cushion?! Thank you for sharing with everyone at NBUS! Hugs, Darnell

Wow! This is amazing! This is a wonderful card and the pencil work is brilliant! Your stone looks much like the stepping stones at the watermeadow, so not a cushion at all x
